Of Moths and Butterflies
I
wanted to be a butterfly
to
hatch into something awe-inspiring
a thing of beauty, attracted to beauty.
I'd land on flowers and children's noses
I'd be such a joyful thing.
But
I'm a moth; I am what I am.
Attracted to the flame
--what doesn't kill me
will only make me stronger--
bouncing off, going back to the light.
There's nothing special about me;
shooed off screen doors and swatted out of spite
for I'm not pretty
no
I'm not a
butterfly.
But I wish I was:
does that count for anything
at all?
