Memories
In
the dimness of morning
I'm throwing away my memories
Everything that reminds me
Gives me a memory of my daughter
I toss
away old sweaters
Littered with moth holes
Curled up awards, dog-eared catalogs
Hair brushes and locks of hair
I try
not to wince
As I dump all her yearbooks
And fling from me
The teddy bear she cherished
Boxes
of magazines
Pencils missing erasers
CD covers and costume jewelry
Nail polish and tapes
As
I push everything of hers
Out of my life
I try not to think about
The consequences of today
In
go the puzzle books
She adored when she was young
The lamps, the glitter
The music books, the flute
A single
red sock that she kept
On the mantle all year
Video tapes of her riding her bike
Uno, Monopoly, watercolor paints
The
kite that she never did use
Clothing and chunky black boots
Cans of pasta, binders and notebooks
The diary I promised to never read
In
the brightness of afternoon
I look upon my stack
Piled neatly in the dumpster
So full it can't close
Best
not to regret
Until it's too late
