Hero

From the very start, they knew she’d sing.
All through the elementary school, she would enjoy music class the most. When in fourth grade, the school organized a chorus. She delighted in taking part although her peers did not. She practiced and sang and took lead roles that the others envied her for. She would sing during the school talent show, amazing audiences of parents with her well-practiced voice, so easily catching and holding the right notes.
And in the middle school she discovered a real chorus, where the singers chose to be there instead of having to be there, and the singing was more challenging and exciting. She lapped it up, thrived on it, made it her escape.
In high school, she did the same, using the music as her guide, and knew it filled the gaps in her that could not be filled otherwise.
There. Up there on the stage. In front of the microphone, under the bright lights. On the television. See her? That is my best friend. That is the girl we all knew would someday shine for everyone.
And she is my idol, my hero. Not because she has fame, not for her voice, but because she made it there, kept at it when nothing else worked, when she thought about stopping.
After all. We knew she would.
