Created near the end of the Civil War in 1864, Andersonville was the Confederacy's equal to the Union's Camp Douglas. "During the war 49,485 prisoners were received at the Andersonville prison, and of these about 13,000 died. The terrible conditions obtaining there were due to the lack of food supplies in the Confederate States, the incompetence of the prison officials, and the refusal of the Federal authorities in 1864 to make exchanges of prisoners, thus filling the stockade with unlooked-for numbers." (Wikipedia)

As with Camp Douglas, there is a cemetary with a monument, where 13, 714 graves are placed, 921 of which are marked 'unknown'. Records were poorly kept, and the nearly 1000 unmarked show this in horrible clarity.

There are several different ghosts that have been described by visitors. One of them is a mysterious Union soldier who leans against the northwest wall corner. His appearance is of a ghost with somewhat ragged clothing and a hat brought down over most of his eyes.

One investigation also found a number of EVPs, or electronic voice phenomenons. These are thought to be the voices of ghosts, although some people feel that they are simply the wind or other naturally-occuring sounds. Often EVPs are caught of phrases being repeated or questions being answered, or phrases that are thought to be the last words of someone before their death.
